Although each child in Haiti is promised free schooling by the Haiti constitution, the government does not have the resources to fulfill that commitment. Private school help to fill that need. Although tuitions are low by U.S. standards (US $200-400 a year), employment prospects for parents and the low wage rate (often US $1/day) often makes these charges unattainable. Both Fr. Jean and Bishop Chibly learn of numerous cases every fall in which changed economic circumstances in a child's household means that they cannot continue their schooling, despite their academic record or ability. In such cases, HBHH steps in to help.
Faced with an inadequate number of public schools and dependent upon an unreliable and impoverished economy to provide necessary jobs to their parents, many children in Haiti need a stable sponsor from the U.S. to make it possible for them to stay in school.
Each fall, HBHH works with Fr. Desinord Jean and Bishop Chibly to identify those children who will be forced to leave their schooling because their parents cannot pay tuition. During the year, emergency cases are also brought to HBHH.
The future for all children in Haiti is troubled, but the future for those children forced to quit school is almost without hope. Parents who have lost jobs know this fact all too well but can do little to raise tuition monies when faced with such circumstances.
When such cases are brought to HBHH, we work hard to find a sponsoring adult in the United States for the child and often use emergency funds to keep the student enrolled until permanent sponsorship can be found.
Each sponsor has a photograph and contact information for their child. In addition, we work with Fr. Jean and Bishop Chibly to stay current with the child's progress in school and make that information available to the sponsor as well.
