Medical Missions

There is little access to healthcare in the mountain villages served by HBHH. Since 2006, HBHH has funded a position for a doctor to staff the medical clinic in St. Suzanne (see Medical Scholarships & Sponsorships). While this is a much-needed improvement, this single doctor alone cannot treat the thousands of people in need of care.

MM teamHBHH medical missions are designed to absorb the impact of hundreds of people who need help by bringing in the extra doctors, nurses and medicines these people need. HBHH sends medical teams that typically see over 1000-2000 persons each week. The triage team identifies the most urgent cases so that these people can be seen without delay. Everyone attends a hygiene class where they learn about nutrition, safe drinking water and prevention of disease.

All patients are treated by the doctors and, if appropriate, they are given medicine. Everyone is given vitamins and heathcare items such as toothpaste, tooth brushes and soap.

In reponse to the January 2010 earthquake, HBHH quickly reponded to the medical needs of the injured in the Port-au-Prince area as well. We sent medical teams of surgeons and nurses and sent medicine and medical supplies, all made possible by the donation of private planes from local business partners.
